GAT coordinates the Citizens' Initiative for the Responsible Regulation of Cannabis for Adults.
This initiative is in line with GAT goals and a need felt for decades by those who work in the field to reduce risks and promote drug policies that break with the prohibitionism in force for more than 100 years.
The initiative began with the reception of the Global Commission on Drug Policy at the Debate organized by GAT- Policies on Drugs – the Future on June 24, 2019, at Casa dos Bicos.
In this Debate, GAT had the honour of counting on the distinguished participation of President Jorge Sampaio and a group of leaders who work in the field of Drug Policies, including Michel Kazatchkine, Ruth Dreifuss, José de Faria-Costa, Maria José Morgado, Tiago Silveira, João Taborda da Gama among others without leaving out the representation of Civil Society and the PUD represented by Marta Pinto, Rui Coimbra, and Magda Ferreira.
An important debate for the reflection not only on the needs still felt, but above all on the possible solutions considering the Portuguese reality.
This initiative is based on a joint strategy based on the best knowledge and reliable and timely data to combat drug trafficking, defend Human Rights, the Rule of Law, and Public Health.
The second highlight of the initiative was the delivery of the Open Letter to the Assembly of the Republic on September 14; more information here.
