10 people with HIV show their faces in an unprecedented campaign
30 Novembro 2022Social prejudices have not kept up with the extraordinary evolution of medicine, meaning that currently those living with HIV have to hide their health condition in order not to be the target of the crime of private life exposure, penalized in access to life and health insurance and excluded from a professional career, such as the military career.
This is the first Portugese campaign in which 10 people living with HIV “show their faces”, publicly assuming their health condition, showing the diversity of identities and the convergence of struggles. Living with HIV is part of their lives, but it is not HIV that defines them.
This campaign is promoted by the CAD Center Anti-Discrimination VIH, a joint project of two associations in the field of HIV/AIDS, GAT and Ser+. It was created 12 years ago to combat the stigma and discrimination that people with HIV still face today.
CAD coordination states that it is “urgent to fight the stigma still associated with this infection and demystify the idea of death and illness that still persists today, promoting the right to freedom of each one to be who they are.”
