Vaccination for mpox and hepatitis A for a safer summer

24 Julho 2024

As part of our mission to promote public health and prevent sexually transmitted infections, GAT, with the support of the Directorate-General for Health, is launching the "Get vaccinated for a safer summer!" campaign. This initiative aims to raise public awareness of the importance of vaccination against mpox and hepatitis A, the most recent outbreaks identified in Portugal, ensuring a worry-free and safer summer for everyone.

What are Mpox and Hepatitis A?

Mpox

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the smallpox virus. This virus is transmitted through skin or mucous membrane contact with the skin and mucous membranes of the person with Mpox, and it is practically impossible to prevent its transmission during sex. Symptoms include fever, intense headaches, swelling of the lymph nodes, muscle pain and skin rashes that can develop into blister-like lesions.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is an infectious liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. This virus is transmitted mainly through eating contaminated food or water or through close contact with an infected person. Symptoms include fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fever and yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).

Vaccination is the key to prevention

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent mpox and hepatitis A. We offer the free mpox vaccine and the free administration of the mpox and hepatitis A vaccine. Vaccination not only protects the vaccinated person, but also contributes to herd immunity, helping to control outbreaks and more serious effects of infections.
